Tanoa bowl of carved wood traditional in design for mixing and drinking kava. 20th century, Fiji. D rim: 15.50 cm. Acquired: Fiji.

Note. The traditional bowl, which is always circular in shape, on three, four or more straight legs and with a triangular head descending from the rim, is said to represent a turtle in stylized form.
