Roof tile surmounted by a turtle modeled in the round, all of unglazed terracotta, from the Sundagarh and Sambalpur region in the borderlands between Orissa, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. L of pantile 13.00 cm. L of turtle: 10.00 cm. H 8.00 cm. Acquired: London.

Note: Tiles like this surmounted by stylized human figures and animals are traditionally made and used by Oraon and Gond tribes to decorate the roofs of their houses.
