Painting in color on canvas of the Kurma avatar, represented in the traditional manner with Vishnu emerging from the mouth of a turtle shown upright on the rear of its carapace. 20th century, India. Dimensions: 23.00 x 18.00 cm. Acquired: Raghurajpur, Orissa, India.

Note. The painting was made in Raghurajpur, the village of painters near Puri in Orissa, by a master of Pattachitra painting, an art form for the decoration of temples and god-carts which is thought to have originated in 5 BC.
