Japanese netsuke of the Takarabune Ivory netsuke (waist-band toggle) of the Takarabune (= treasure ship) of the Shichi Fukujin (= Seven Gods of Luck) with four minogame (hair tailed turtles) swimming alongside. Late 19th early 20th century, Japan. L 5.75 cm. W 4.50 cm. H 5.00 cm. Acquired: Brussels. Note: There being no pockets in traditional Japanese dress, small personal items were carried in sagemono (containers) attached to a string hanging from the obi (sash) worn round the waist. The containers were secured by a netsuke (toggle) at the other end of the string that was passed under the sash to be trapped in place against the body above the top edge of the sash.
