Japanese lamp - Forani Collection

Japanese lamp inspired by traditional candlestick
Forani Collection
Cat. No: CH75-300

Lamp of milk-glass on a gilded metal stand in the form of a crane standing on the back of a dragon-headed minogame (hair tailed turtle), an adaptation of the traditional tsurukame shokudai (crane on turtle candlestick). Early 20th century, Japan. Base 15.50 x 14.00 cm. H 32.00 cm. Acquired: Brussels.

Note: The legendary minogame is particular to Japan. Its long tail of hair is a sign of great age and, being capable of living 10,000 years, it is the supreme symbol of longevity. It is said that the myth derives from the strings of moss that sometimes trail from the shells of old turtles living in ponds. Nonetheless the minogame is usually associated with the sea.
