Indian dhokra Vishnu Cast metal statuette of the god Vishnu in traditional Indian design called dhokra. 20th century, India. L 17.50 cm. W 13.00 cm. H 13.50 cm. Acquired: New Delhi, India. Note. Dhokra is an alloy of brass, copper and zinc employed to make objects and images made using the lost wax process by people of the Siluria tribe in Odisha (formerly Orissa). To present Vishnu seated on a turtle is not customary but it is no doubt intended as a representation of his incarnation as a turtle in the Kurma avatar.
