Brass statue of Zhuque, the summer bird of the south, standing on the back of Xuanwu, the winter turtle of the north. 20th century. L 15.00 cm. H 29.00 cm. Acquired: Cannes, France.

Note. Xuanwu is not always shown in the coils of a serpent. The combination of bird on turtle is classical Chinese, whether or not this statue is actually from China. In all likelihood it is a modern reproduction of an ancient piece.
