Chinese Han temple candlestick, underside
Forani Collection
Cat. No: CH73-806

Temple candlestick of carved steatite in the form of a turtle with a fabulous beast’s head inscribed on the underside in archaic Chinese characters: Made in the fourth year of Yangjia, Emperor of the Eastern Han. 2nd century, China. Acquired: London.

Note. The name Yangjia was given to the second period (AD 132-135) of the reign of the Eastern Han emperor Shun Di (reigned AD 125-144). The fourth year of Yangjia corresponds therefore to AD 135. This object was illustrated and described in The Illustrated London News, October 1973.
