Copy of stone rubbing on paper representing Xuanwu (the Dark Warrior), guardian of the northern quadrant. 20th century, China. Dimensions of paper: 102.00 x 59.00 cm. Acquired: Beijing, China.

Note. The original stone carving is said to have been made after a painting by the celebrated Tang dynasty painter Wu Tao-tzü, ca. 700-760, of whom no great works are extant. There is an original stone rubbing in the British Museum, Cat No: B445.
